Meet Alicia
Ten months ago, Alicia faced a common struggle for many Spanish learners: She knew plenty of vocabulary, but she couldn’t really express herself. Conversations felt clunky, and her limited grasp of grammar left her second-guessing herself. Even basic interactions were a source of frustration.
Fast-forward to today, and Alicia’s fluency is night-and-day different. She can confidently navigate real-world situations, communicate with native speakers, and even translate in real time at her place of work.
About Alicia
Alicia is an American voice actor and world traveler.
At first, her goal for learning Spanish was career-oriented. She wanted to break into the Spanish voiceover market to connect with a wider audience.
However, as her journey unfolded, her goal evolved into a passion. As she became more fluent, she found she could connect with more people across the globe on a deeper level. For Alicia, learning Spanish has opened door after door — from understanding Spanish art and poetry to being able to confidently walk into any interaction and navigate it in her new second language. Today, Alicia is preparing to move to Spain, with new job opportunities in dubbing, script translation, and beyond.
“Now living in Spain is not just a dream. Now it's something tangible... not only can I go there and do well, I can go there and thrive.”
The Challenges Alicia Overcame
A few short months ago, Alicia struggled to communicate in Spanish. She had a working knowledge of the language, thanks to four years of high school Spanish, but she struggled to turn her vocabulary into meaningful conversations.
It was frustrating, because she knew an enormous number of Spanish words, but she was unable to organize and express her own thoughts clearly.
As she puts it, “I lacked the infrastructure of the language." Without core grammar, verb tenses, and idiomatic expressions, Alicia’s Spanish felt fragmented. She often second-guessed herself and was painfully aware that her exchanges in Spanish were very surface-level.
How Alicia Transformed Her Spanish
Throughout 2024, Alicia discovered new methods that helped her overcome all of her challenges and flourish as a Spanish speaker.
Here are the tools that made all the difference for Alicia:
- Thinking in Spanish: By starting with the highest-frequency words and idioms, Alicia learned how to internalize the language. She shifted from translating in her head to forming thoughts naturally in Spanish.
- Communicating Complex Ideas: Alicia used LearnCraft Spanish's grammar-centric approach. By mastering verb conjugations and complex sentence structures, she quickly freed her mind up to think about the meaning of her sentences, not just how they are put together.
- Conversation Confidence: After about 100 hours of face-to-face practice, communicating in Spanish comes easily for Alicia, whether it’s at work or to help others.
This newfound fluency opened unexpected doors: Understanding art, poetry, and music in Spanish, thriving job opportunities, and being able to translate for the people around her.
“I'm a voiceover actor, and I do dubbing from Spanish to English. Now, all of a sudden, when looking at the original script in Spanish, I'm able to understand it, and help with script adaptation in real-time, which makes me that much more of an asset as an actor.”
